Know Location is Key – Be sure to confirm the exact location of your lakeside vacation rental. Ask how far is it from town?

Maine vacation rental

Stay on Moosehead Lake

What is the distance to the waterfront? Cabin rental property in shoreline zoning districts will indicate that your vacation rental is truly a lakeside rental.  Get the physical address and verify location with Google maps to confirm location of your Maine vacation rental.

What is the access to the lake? Walk in beach and or dock? A rental with both walk in access and a dock is preferred. Not everyone wants to climb up a ladder to get into the water. Having a beach area is great for kids.  Great for launching your canoe or kayak to go explore Moosehead Lake.

What direction is the waterfront facing? Will you loose the sunlight in the afternoon. Does it showcase beautiful lake sunsets, mountains and lake views?Cozy Moose Lakeside Cabin Rentals Moosehead Lake Cabins Views

Where on the lake is the vacation rental? Not all coves on Moosehead Lake are the same. Very few have sandy swimming beaches. Some pebble beaches, and steep inclines to the water with a dock only. Not all rentals offer swimming beaches with crystal clear water. Ask what the waterfront is like and how easy is it to get to the lake? How far is the vacation rental from town? Choose a cabin rental near Greenville, Maine.

How much traffic does the road see that the vacation rental is on? Is the rental near the road? Is it off a private road? If so, consider how far it is offset from the main road. Will you hear the logging trucks and road traffic all hours of the night? What is the speed limit?  Be sure to rent with a view and experience nature.

Maine Vacation Rental Property

Does it have landscaped areas to relax and enjoy? A vacation cabin property with a combination of landscaped areas, gardens, grass and natural beauty allowing you to enjoy the best of everything. Is outdoor seating provided and is there a picnic area on site?

Maine Vacation Rental Listings

Some vacation rental listings are just data bases by city, location, or by a filter choice of waterfront. Making a decision on a data base listing for a Maine Vacation rental alone can be risky.   As you can see, not all Moosehead Lake vacation rentals provide the same lakeside vacation experience. Do your homework and know the facts before you go. Do you speak to the owners or an agent? These things are all important when choosing the perfect place for your vacation.

Be Safe – Don’t Know – Don’t Go – Water bodies unsafe- still freezing up. Many lakes are still freezing up and not all areas are safe passages.

Even though we saw today that Moosehead Lake east cove had some markers which will connect South and North Trails of Moosehead Lake, until all makers set. Don’t Go on The Lake.  Once all markers set, the Moosehead Riders Snowmobile club or State of Maine Wardens will advise on safe passage. Until then, stay off lake. Moosehead Lake is starting to freeze up and this is a promising sign as last few cold nights have been great for ice making.

Report is that land snowmobile trail passage from downtown Greenville to North Trails is being re routed and is now open. Expect to encounter other trail changes in the area. Will advise as we know more.

26 Sep Moose Watching Tourism in Maine

Moose Watching Tourism in Maine

Moose Watching

So, you want to see a Moose? For many visitors to Maine, that is one of the reasons they choose to come here in hopes being able to see a Moose.  The current Moose population in Maine is estimated to be at 75,000 much higher than the previous count of 29,000 done in 2003.  With the one of the largest population of Moose in the country, Moose watching wildlife viewing attracts visitors from all over the world to experience this majestic creature in the Maine woods.

We recently attended a Moose Seminar in Greenville, Maine with guest speaker Lee Kantar, the State Moose Biologist. He explained that the general management of Moose involved balancing influences for wildlife viewing, hunters, and the safety of general public. The State of Maine is divided into 29 districts each having a target ratio to maintain.  He explained the latest count was done by scientific counting method used by helicopter. Some Moose facts were provided, and then he took questions from the audience.

Since Moose tourism is a big draw to Greenville, Maine, it was not surprising that several questions were based on where the moose are in The Moosehead Lake Region. He explained that the movement of moose throughout the state is common. Moose will move around as land use changes, clear cuts re- grow, pond vegetation gets striped and beaver infestation occurs.

We observed mixed comments from the crowd to some being that they don’t see many moose, to we just seen several moose today.  With the Moosehead Lake Region having one of the highest populations of Moose in the state, Greenville Maine is one of the most sought out destinations for moose watching.   The moose are maintained at the ratio of 3.5- 4.5 moose per square mile in our area.

Some seasons yield higher number of sightings and other times of year they are more elusive.  One needs to be persistent, look at the right time of day and in areas where conditions are conducive to support food sources they need to survive. So it all boils down to being in the right place at the right time.  Guided or self guided, anyone can see a Moose, but of course, guided tours increase your probability.  If your planning a vacation and want to experience a moose sighting, consider staying at The Cozy Moose where our guests see them quite often.
